The Maine Coon in South Africa is promoted by the Maine Coon Interest Group of SA. Breeder members to the MCIG have to sign a Code of Ethics to ensure and promote ethical breeding practices. On exhibitions and shows the Maine Coon's rugged looks and fierce demeanour captivate attention.   The South African public has great respect for this breed of cat with  legends including journeys with the Vikings over the Atlantic ocean, ancestors including Marie Antoinette's cats rescued from revolutionary France and impossible breeding with raccoons!
